A Woman of Genius

By  Vicki Cooke 2016
This first solo exhibition is the culmination of many years work researching and making drawings inspired by historical female artists. It is being held in conjunction with Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery and will be showing artwork from their collection by women that is not normally seen, alongside the 3 series of drawings that make up 'A Woman of Genius' In addition I have made a series of works in response to the museum collection, taking as a starting point the craft items associated with women.

Many women were making art in the 17th and 18th century, but much of their work has disappeared without a trace. How do we choose to remember the past when what we see is always incomplete? The ghosts of the forgotten are haunting, but through the action of drawing, they are remembered. Featuring in the series 'A Woman of Genius', rediscovering the lives of women artists. Fratellini ran a successful studio in Florence in the Baroque period and painted portraits and religious scenes.
