Arabesque

A video still from performance II of Arabesque at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, October 2002. Commissioned by the Campaign for Drawing, the dancers inscribed their gestures on the paper surface with charcoal taken from specially designed costumes, creating a dance calligraphy which transmits line, emotion and weight. The choreography was based on the famous Ardabil carpet in the Islamic gallery with its 'arabesque' motifs and performed to Keith Jarrett's saxophone piece 'Invocations One'.
