Newly commissioned works (KCC) created through residencies offered to four contemporary artists living and working in Kent as part of the project The Valley of Vision: Samuel Palmer and the Ancients. The intention is that the new work will arise from a similar sensibility to that of Samuel Palmer's poetic transformation of the specifics of a landscape and place, in this case Shoreham in Kent. They will form part of an exhibition of works by Samuel Palmer and the Ancients to be held at the Sevenoaks Library Gallery. My work consists of four 2D works and the video Fish Soup. An interest in texture as a mean of bypassing rational thought and investigating the unconscious led me to experimenting with and utilising the mud taken from the River Darent in Shoreham. Laying the mud on paper, random tracks were left by the organisms as they moved, providing the basis for the mythological imagery that emerged. The earth bound constellations are viewed from an aerial perspective, inverting the perceived concept of them having a heavenly origin.
