Arctic Orbit

On a flight to California during the late 1990’s the plane’s trajectory crossed Alaska. As it flew low above the icy mantle of the Arctic, I was astonished by a glimpse of a polar bear and her two cubs crossing the fragile surface below. It was gone in an instant, but I had time to take a photograph before the scene entirely vanished. This was registered more strongly in memory than it the frame itself, and I continue to work with the image, trying to make a more substantial record of the event. Materials: Chalk, earth pigments and mica
