Arctic Orbit

On a flight to California during the late 1990’s the plane’s trajectory crossed Alaska. As it flew low above the icy mantle of the Arctic, I was astonished by a glimpse of a polar bear and her two cubs crossing the fragile surface below. It was gone in an instant, but I had time to take a photograph before the scene entirely vanished. This was registered more strongly in memory than it the frame itself, and I continue to work with the image, trying to make a more substantial record of the event. Mars 1 (Earl Richards Road North)

This is a painting of two layers relating to the experience and limitations of communication via Skype. The shadowy 'figure' is trapped behind a screen, obscured by the pointillist/divisionist dots of light. The colours suggest a nocturnal view, dominated by orange, which reflects of the ubiquitous colouring of the sodium vapour streetlamp.
