Ariadne One

On one level the painting is about a boat trip, evening light on the Aegean Sea, a Memory of Knossos simultaneously it is about confusion, broken surfaces, ambiguity and a liminal space.
With the distinguished exception of “Bacchus and Ariadne” by Titian, Ariadne is typically depicted as languorous and waiting to be seduced – by Bacchus or the viewer. I would rather incline towards an adventurous and furious woman.
The painting is another non-figurative depiction of a transitional space, perhaps a sea trip to a deserted island.
Oil paint on deep canvas.
