Arms Plutonic 6

By  Susan Banks 2014

This painting is part of continuing work that plays with the paradoxical practice of visualising the impossible which painting reveals. It dissolves the familiar narrative, the solidified metaphor, opening up other meanings and feelings. The Arms Plutonic series spins off from a poem by DH Lawrence, Bavarian Gentians, which uses the phrase Arms Plutonic in reference to Persephone’s ambiguous relationship with Pluto, another topic in my work. Although the poem is partly about blueness the series of paintings have swerved towards red – quite reasonable as no image is visible as such and the colours in Hades are arbitrary.
