The Echo Paintings follow the Narcissus series and refer to ideas of surface, skin, mirrors and reflections. They abstract from and make reference to Baroque painting. They employ visual metaphors of metaphors in order to elude what might have been an expected narrative but also to provoke or resuscitate other meanings and connections. Subtle asymmetries and near symmetries underpin the structure of the paintings whilst suggesting a reflected image. Echo disregards the expected repetition or reflected equivalent associated with Narcissus but may be contradictory and critically retroactive through subtle changes. The painting has a rich and decorative surface but suggests a disquieting incipient visibility.
