Cut lengths of wood are placed vertically and horizontally to form a rectangle on the floor. From a distance the pieces appear to overlap one another, meshing together and sometimes forming crosses, set squares, mallets and other tools. When nearby and looking down on the work the individual components seem to spread out and have an unnatural sense of separation, almost floating through space. The uprights can also read as people and the horizontals as bars, benches or tables suggesting a meeting place, work place or congregation. Associations include a cemetery, church, library, conference, examination centre, a production line and also a hearth laid ready for a fire.
