Baetylus

By  Susan Eyre 2019
Steel, direct to media print on acrylic. Baetylus (meaning from the house of god), are sacred stones/meteorites of divine origin. A tower forms a connection between the mortal earth and the heavens, there was a time when meteorites were considered sent from the gods...or portents of fortune. An object falling through space distorts not only the space it travels through but also time as space and time are inexorably linked. Before glasses monks used polished rock crystal to help failing eyesight, these 'reading stones' were one of the first technical enhancements for our senses which led to other optical aids including the telescope and microscope allowing us to explore the universe at different scales. Both the telescope and microscope are referenced by this sculpture.
