Be Our Guest

By  Anna Falcini 2013
Be Our Guest 29 June - 04 September 2013 Oriel Davies Gallery Initial research at two B&B establishments in Newtown, Plas Canol and Highgate, explored the notion of the wilder landscape of the countryside around Newtown in Wales and the comforting environments offered by the B&Bs. Of particular interest were the navigation of the landscape using maps and the daily cleaning routines of the B&Bs that seemed to offer sharp contrasts to the natural and the domestic. Cleaning implements were reconstructed using natural materials, so broom bristles were replaced with twigs for example. These tools were then used as drawing implements and tracing paper became a surface for map-like investigations of the landscape as a place of leisure.
