Celestial Fix

By  Irene Rogan 2007 - 2009

Mark Baigent

Dimensions
400cm x 150cm

The ceiling sculpture is embedded into the new Army and Navy Hotel building. It is an interactive light sculpture. An image from deep space known as the 'Veil Nebula' has been used to create a work that connects the viewer with an image of the REAL universe. The stars evoke a sense of awe and the work references the inspirational importance of the stars in the history of human development, mythology and scientific exploration. The work connects environment and science. Irene worked with CHFT Hawaii (Canada France Hawaii Telescope) personnel and e2v Chelmsford (space imaging company supplier of sensors to hubble and terrestrial telescopes) the artist created 'Celestial Fix' . It also celebrates International Year of Astronomy 2009. (see www.astronomy2009.co.uk for details of launch event) There are two new constellations within the work based on the existing 'Veil Nebula' stars. One is 'Shelter' and the other is 'Hand' both constellations were developed with Sixth Form pupils from Moulsham High School and with the artist and a scientist from e2v. The constellations are made of fibre optic lights programmed to alternate in relation to real celestial events occurring throughout the year, using an astronomy calendar.
