Chameleon : Mars Black + Cadium Yellow is an investigation into the parallels drawn between our appreciation of natural phenomena and Art. Rather than creating a painting from direct observation, Chameleon : Mars Black + Cadium Yellow draws on our optical and direct experiences of nature by presenting vivid colours of paint in this direct and unique way. This installation appropriates the vivid colours of Madagasgar's Minor's chameleon and combines it with nature’s yellow and black “warning signal” as an allegory to this idea.
The layers of yellow and black acrylic paint are interspersed with streaks of neon colours, mixed with PVA glue and cut into strands. The scale of the installation is intended to be immersive, drawing the viewer in. The 'rolling waves of colour' initially presented evaporate to reveal delicate strands of colour as the viewer moves under and around the work, thus becoming an optical event whereby the viewer physically engages to experience.
