Department store is again based on the High Cross extension. Depicting the building almost like a church or temple I wanted a defiant monumental stance to be felt in the painting. Structural outlines of the building beneath a gloss varnish are based on computer layouts from a Computer Aided Design program used by architects. The gloss finish is inspired by the highly reflective outer skin of the windows that mirrors the high street; this is mimicked in the painting as the viewer can observe themselves and the gallery backdrop.
