DESCENDANTS: wall sculpture ?vitreous enamelled steel and wood fibre panel ten set wall mounted sculptures?length 400cm x height 90cmm x depth 4cm approx. Lisa Traxler 2021 This wall sculpture is one of the newly commissioned works for the Arts Council England grant awarded exhibition 'Dazzle + Disrupt' West Gallery, Quay Arts, IW. 27th March - 13th June 2021. Taking an earlier artwork; ‘Industry’ - a large scale wall mural painted for the exhibition ‘Dazzle: continuing the art of disruption’ exhibition (2018-19) at Southampton City Art Gallery, Traxler deconstructs the design and evolves this decryption puzzle further with the wall based sculpture ‘Descendants’. These vitreous enamelled steel and wood fibre panel shards create numerous geometric shattered systems once hung with the wall between each component an essential spatial element. The black surround material outlining the edges highlighting the new abstracted textural interpretation of this seemingly unspecified wall piece. The medium vitreous enamel, a fussed glass ink, was chosen to reflect and highlight the geometric patterning. A material the artist has been working with for over a decade, captures the spatial qualities required for this wall sculpture. The installations in ‘Dazzle + Disrupt’ establish connections with the scale and the reality of the disrupted schemes of dazzle camouflage of WW1 through a specific relationship with the surroundings. All artworks are new pieces created for this exhibition by the artist in her continuing exploration of this subject.
