Time Traveller Transformation

By  Lisa Traxler 2021
TIME TRAVELLER - TRANSFORMATION: floor based sculpture A new set of commissioned works for the 'Dazzle and Disrupt' Arts Council England Grant Funded exhibition at Quay Arts, Isle of Wight, 27 March - 13 June 2021 From the two dimensional wall sculpture ‘Descendants’ Traxler reconfigures off the wall to create the set of five slotted and hand painted three dimensional sculptures; ‘Time Traveller - Transformation’. Each vertical surface uniquely painted in a disruptive design and shaped to allude to ships vessels or fragments of defence architecture. These jagged geometric laser cut wood forms create a transitory sense and a temporary confusion of identity through the gallery space and viewed against the tension of the hand painted wall mural. This delineation between the two dimensional edge of vertical painting and the three dimensional edge of the sculptures creating an illusion of perspective and unknowing. The apertures created by extracting shaped forms play with the surface planes to increase this perspective illusion. The palette and disruptive pattern of these floor based pieces, each unique, correspond with the instructions from the CAFO and AFO documents they have been researched from. The palette alludes to the principles of classification design; tone, dark disruptive, light disruptive, location, movement, climate, in correlation to the gallery space. Throughout lockdown the artist researched various materials to unite three dimensional sculptural forms with hand painted two dimensional planes. Through a rich period of research and development this new medium was evolved by the artist. These are the first, of this scale, the artist has created exclusively for this exhibition.
