Developing leatherette sheets for outdoor installation

I use fabric, string, paper and wooden sticks to produce sculptural modules which I take with me outdoors to make temporary installations with them. The photographs here show the development process of leatherette sheets which are foldable surfaces that are part of such sculptures. Some of the fabrication techniques are related to tailoring and garment manufacturing. I studied fashion, so working with fabric to produce three-dimensional objects is familiar to me as are the methods for treating edges, corners and holes. In nomadic cultures we find a lot of textile technology too, when people use tents, or use string to attach things. There is a fascinating relationship between artmaking outdoors and the nomadic cultures of this world. Both have practices that respond to the need to only use a certain amount of materials and be able to transport them, all in response to the outdoor environment's terrain and weather.
