Discovery Oak

Photo: Ian Marshall

Discovery Oak in Denny Town Square, as part of the Denny Treasure Trail, 2018; stainless steel and oak. Commissioned by Falkirk Council as part of the £7.6m regeneration project in the centre of Denny, Falkirk, Scotland. The sculpture with its oak rectangular base and ship, references the stern post on Captain Scott's 1901 Antarctic vessel RRS Discovery, hewn from an oak tree in Herbertshire Park, Dunipace. The ship's sail symbolises the frozen sea and in its oak leaf shape both the stern post, and the proliferation of oak trees, that grow along the River Carron.
