"Dragonfly"

By  Joanne Risley 2019
In 2000 I completed three bronze sculptures for a sculpture trail along a section of The Monmouthshire Canal in Newport, South Wales. I wanted to create a link to the canal boats and the boat people that formerly served this stretch of canal as well as providing information for the public along the trail. The pieces; a dragonfly, a relief and a gateway sculpture were an amalgamation of boat form and detail. The two later pieces included maps and text, which the local canal society provided a lot of assistance with. The dragonfly was created using sculptural forms found within the context of canal boats and canal engineering and represents the changing heritage of a once busy industrial thoroughfare to a now tranquil wildlife reserve.
