England versus Chile

By  Victoria Hall 1998

Victoria Hall

The video presented follows a group of fans watching a football match in a pub in London during the build up to the World cup in 1998. The camera was placed below the large projection screen that was showing a live football match. It focuses on one table with three men around it for the duration of the game. As an audience, we now observe another audience. One of the most atmospheric elements of football has been removed - the sound. We are left to observe this group, the stillness, intensity and concentration in their faces is almost exaggerated by the silence, with a sudden contrast at the half time break. This engagement is taken a step further with the comments from the table appearing as subtitles The viewer becomes engaged with the men and surprisingly gripped, waiting for their reactions to give some indication as to the events of play and who might be winning.
