Euromarket

Euromarket is a new body of work in development within Madara’s practice. Beginning with embroidered reconstructions of European food shops in the UK, the work explores these spaces as places where different nationalities, languages and cultures intersect. For Madara, these shops hold a particular significance as some of the first places she encountered after moving to the UK.

​Working with hessian, a material associated with the transportation and movement of goods, alongside the traditionally domestic process of embroidery, the work reflects the ways cultural identity is carried across borders and maintained through everyday life.

​The work also considers these shops as sites where cultural identity is visible, reflecting the tension between political narratives around migration and the everyday reality of people continuing to share and use these spaces.
