Femicides

By  Arabel Lebrusan 2023 - 2024

Femicides addresses the gender-based murder of women or girls by men. This wall piece consists of 69 tiles made from broken crockery embedded in plaster, symbolising female deaths in England and Wales resulting from domestic crimes between April 2022 and March 2023. The shattered plates function as an indexical sign, representing the victims of abuse. Each tile showcases distinct broken china with unique designs, symbolising the individuality of the victims. These tiles were created in collaboration with 21 women and girls from diverse backgrounds during my residency at Quiet Down There, an arts organisation in Brighton. The project aims to provide a voice to those who have been silenced.
