Fifty fifty

By  Maria Kuipers 2014
Collaboration with Robert Sosner 'Fifty fifty is a painting about Brighton West Pier and the i360 redevelopments. The creative process started with observation, by drawing and making collage in situ on the beach in the front of the Pier. This was over a period of time in the summer months. I wanted to capture a sense of place and space, the warm summer, additionally what was happening in the surrounding environment. The finished paintings referred to my experience of collaboration, place and project as a whole as well as drawings I had made. The collaborative painting process was a liberating experience and helped me to let go of being precious. We responded to each others painted marks and collage on the canvas, by either painting over previous paint or extending an idea. Most importantly I felt was allowing the process to develop organically. There were no fights only laughter.
