This Flotilla was made in response to research into the roles of women in the slate quarries of North Wales and exhibited within the collaborative exhibition Merched Chwarel.
Historically women were not allowed to work on these small slate carrying boats which sailed down the river Dwyryd to the harbour in Porthmadog.
This Flotilla explores the stereotypical portrayal of how women would have behaved in such roles, with humour being used as a subversive element.
The boats were inspired by the historical names of these slate carrying boats
