Fountain

By  Olivia Irvine 2015
This is a fresco- pure pigment on fresh lime plaster. I used the buon fresco technique of painting in daily sections. The image is of a fountain with birds. It is inspired by the paintings in the Roman Villa di Poppaea, Oplontis near Naples. These paintings are over 2000 years old, yet retain their freshness and vibrancy because of the way the earth pigments are locked into the structure of the wall. I used a portable wall for this made from wood, wire mesh, cement and layers of lime and sand.
