Gadfly Five

Gadfly Five continues the series on a larger canvas. The painting again, in referencing Gorgoneion mosaics, alludes to a threshold, a liminal space, an apotropaic sign, and is intentionally dizzying or confusing. The formal intention is to balance two variations of alternating spirals, one to do with colour and the other with tone. as ever, this works differently in different lighting conditions and also in different photographs.
The underlying geometry is essentially done by hand and eye - no computer programme or robot involved.
Oil on Canvas.
