Hall of Pipes

By  Alke Schmidt 2018
Oil on wool/silk upholstery fabric made in Yorkshire, 45 x 65 cm From a mini-series of paintings dedicated to the wool industry in Bradford and Yorkshire today. They show impressions of my visit to Haworth Scouring, a wool scouring and combing plant in Bradford City. The painting’s 'canvas' is a commercial upholstery fabric made in Huddersfield with wool processed at Haworth Scouring. I did not prime the fabrics before painting on them so as to preserve their original colours and characterics. This example shows that high-volume textiles can be, and are, made in Yorkshire today using local manufacturers throughout the supply chain, providing local jobs.
