Large-scale Acrylic on Canvas 10' x 6'6"
One of a series of large scale canvasses that were developed in the studio from studies direct from observation of a single mountain in the Lake District: Helm Crag, Grasmere. This canvas was shown with another large scale canvas, HC 3, together with a series of studies dating from 1995 - 2021.
'I would watch the changes: the light moving across the face, the rain curtaining, the mists forming and concealing, this detail revealed then another. 'What began as the discipline of charting those changes rapidly developed into the charting of an inner as well as an outer reality. For whilst the observation is of the mountain, the mountain is not itself the entire subject. Because what we see is a construct, an interpretation, the paintings become a form of disciplined revelation as well as a way of coming to realise what is being seen' (text from Angear Visitor Centre, Djanogly Gallery, Lakeside, Nottingham University Park, 2022).
