One of a continuing series of watercolours, studies of Helm Crag above Grasmere in the Lake District, a place rich in memories and meaning for me. What we see is itself a construct, an interpretation of the world, and watercolour makes its own demands as a medium, so these studies are explorations of both seeing and painting. Because of the position the place occupies in my life they are also metaphorical and autobiographical. They are the reference points for the larger scale works on canvas which are developed over much longer periods of time. This was made during a stay just after New Year 2001.
