Helix

By  Anna Masters 2014
Helix is part of the Ring of Roses collection of works, which contrast the organic forms of butterflies and petals with formal geometric pattern. The helix designs refer to Chaos Theory, where the delicate butterflies and petals are used to create a sense of motion and force. The works are created using a network of clear nylon grids, creating the illusion that the butterflies and petals are suspended mid-air. These grids are built up in layers, giving the works a sense of depth. The butterflies are sourced from old and unwanted entomology displays, for the most part obtained through auction. Though this means that there may be imperfections with the specimens, the butterflies’ histories add to the story and integrity of the work, referencing change and the passing of time.
