Sum of Hope

By  Anna Masters 2015
Sum of Hope is a large-scale, free standing work which is viewable from both sides. The piece represents the passage of time; the colours of the rose petals gradiate from deep purples on one side, through to pale pinks on the other. The darker side, representing night time and mortality, is interspersed with vintage white and cream moths, whilst the other side, 'day time' holds butterflies - symbolically linked with change, growth and time. The work has been created using a network of clear nylon grids, creating the illusion that the butterflies and petals are suspended mid-air. These grids are built up in layers, giving the work a sense of depth. The butterflies are sourced from old and unwanted entomology displays, for the most part obtained through auction. Though this means that there may be imperfections with the specimens, the butterflies’ histories add to the story and integrity of the work, referencing change and the passing of time.
