The annual Heritage Day celebrations in Cape Town, South Africa while I was an artist in residency and wandering around the city centre. there were mostly black and mixed race families visiting the museum and gallery in the gardens as everything is free that day-very few white families to be seen. These kids were just playing around a war memorial-I don't think they knew each other and I was struck by their relaxed attitudes whilst the white girl seemed stiff and awkward as she posed for her photo. Maybe I read a lot into it but it seemed emblematic of the new South Africa.
