Hill

By Joanna Mowbray 2024

The small sculpture ‘ Hill’ is a wall-based , soldered construction made from a recycled organ pipe. The surface of the lead alloy is carefully sanded back with fine wire wool to take off the grime of years to reveal a beautiful silver, grey finish. The organ pipe would have dated back to well over a hundred years.

I am interested in the way the form and material reflect the changes of light throughout the day, the shadows change from being above the form to being below. This makes the form appear to float.

From my studio I can see the hills of the Pennines in the distance and the steely grey blue clouds. ‘Hill’ this small sculpture echoes this sense of distance although it’s a small form it can create a sense of an immensity of space. So too, being in the moment and the past, they combine together to form memories of where I live and work.
