Hobbes Lane

This sculpture is one of series using the same format - a triptych with a central model interior.  Hobbes Lane is the name of a (fictional) place in London, the site of an under-construction tube station.  During the excavations a large cylinder, assumed at first to be an unknown rocket or bomb from WW2, is discovered.  At the same time the fossilised remains of ancient humans are found.  Research into the geological layers reveals that both the cylinder (a space ship) and the fossils are 2 million years old.  This is the plot of the 1950’s science-fiction tv series Quatermass and the Pit, which proceeds to bring in ancient Martians breeding the origins of humanity, buried race memories of horned devils, and an underlying genetic predisposition for violence towards those that ‘do not fit in’.  Shown as part of the installation A Sad Pavane for these Distracted Times at Keelung Museum of Art, Taiwan, 2026
