Rachel Carson pioneered ecological activism through lobbying and publication, getting the USA State to ban DDT as pesticide used in agriculture. Her publication "Silent Spring" graphically describes the horrendous effects on ecology due to pesticide abuse. Pages and pages of descriptions of suffering creatures, dead or dying, make depressing and sobering reading. Ecological catastrophes are epitomised in mass deaths of birds, marine animals, insects.
