Hymn to the Hidden Mother

Dimensions
HD video with sound, 4 mins 32 secs

The work is one of a series of performance to camera videos I have made in sacred or pseudo-sacred places. The impetus behind these was to perform actions as if it were possible to reawaken the divine energy of the location. In this particular video I perform in the ruins of the ancient city of Edessa in Greek Macedonia. Additional footage is from the archaeological site of Pella, north-west of Thessaloniki. The work references mother goddesses such as Artemis who were venerated in these places. It also utilises remnants of the cities’ residential spaces such as hearths, where domestic deities would have played a key role in home life. These images are intercut with shots of shrouded ruins which recall bodily forms.
