Kuboneka

By  Katie Taylor 2022 - 2023
Kuboneka (var kwebonekesya) v – appear, come into sight, be found – Kinyarwanda Rwandan language Water has always existed on earth in the same quantity. All living things are made up of a large proportion of water. Water evaporates and is held within the air unseen. a ghostly presence that constantly surrounds us. In this piece I am exploring ideas around presence and absence at the sites of atrocities against the Tutsi in Rwanda during the genocide in 1994. The use of an absent piece of clothing and a halo of sprayed water that then evaporates into the surrounding air, asks us to question our ideas around the absence and the presence of those who lost their lives there.
