The painting, loosely based on trompe l’oiel wall paintings of lararia from Pompeii and Herculaneum, alludes to apotropaic signs and the aesthetic of damage. Darkening with gold and crimson glazes increases the sense of a liminal and ambiguous space. Oil paint on deep canvas.
