Material Engagement

Taking bone beads found at the Neolithic site of Skara Brae, Orkney as a starting point, this project is an exploration of the embodied experience of making, beginning with the collection of raw materials; rabbit bones found on the grass at the Ring of Brodgar, Orkney, and nettles sourced near my home. The materials have been processed using a flint tool (the bone) and soaking in water and stripping down (the nettle fibres) to make a bracelet .A replica flint tool was used to cut the bone into sections. The work was made while studying Art and Archaeology: Contemporary Theory and Practice with the University of the Highlands and Islands, Orkney: https://www.uhi.ac.uk/en/archaeology-institute/study-here/art-and-archaeology/# Part of the process was recorded in a video work Material Engagement. Material Engagement is an archive of objects made from natural and manufactured materials.
