Michelangelo's Prisoners

The Prisoners are arguably the most personal of Michelangelo's great works and are yet subject to appropriation and interpretation as celebrated pieces of heritage. This series of pinhole photographs addresses the commoditisation of culture that arises from such democratisation by transforming the tourist photograph into a personalised and laborious process. The camera was built for the purpose and elaborate darkroom techniques used in a process of magical realism akin to painting.
