Mining Landscape Near Pendeen, Cornwall

By Phil Whiting 1991

For many years I lived in West Cornwall and painted it's harsh post-industrial hinterland and rich mining heritage. I would go out in all weathers making drawings and collecting mining debris samples and on returning to my studio - a converted traditional granite Cornish barn - work them up into large scale heavy impasto oil paintings on board often with these samples collected on site mixed in. This work is one such painting.
