Mysteries Twenty

By  Susan Banks 2016 - 2017

Dimensions
60 x 60 x 4

I have discovered an essay by Maurice Owen on false doors and their symbolism in Roman painting – very satisfying when doors or rather apertures have been hinted at from the start of this series. This is the twentieth in a series that responds to 2000-year-old wall painting and is a continued attempt to escape the lures of cinnabar red. These “doors” must remain shut but have handles. The painting wasn’t intended to look Egyptian or Japanese- these things happen. Oil on deep canvas.
