Night Sea Vision - Cow Pasture

This painting is part of a series that followed a visit to the historic cells at Devonport Guildhall and subsequent exhibition there. That set me thinking about the visions and hallucinations that are frequently experienced in states of confinement and sensory deprivation, including when lone sailors are under duress in long distance races. This 'vision of a vision' resulted from reading of the experiences of sailors in such conditions. Materials include ink, charcoal and chalk on Khadi paper.

This is a painting of two layers relating to the experience and limitations of communication via Skype. The shadowy 'figure' is trapped behind a screen, obscured by the pointillist/divisionist dots of light. The colours suggest a nocturnal view, dominated by orange, which reflects of the ubiquitous colouring of the sodium vapour streetlamp.
