Numb
Trigger warning. This piece holds multiple narratives connected to maternity.
‘Numb’ forms part of my wider practice that uses unpicking as a metaphor to explore processes of collapse and regeneration.
For this piece, I unpick a fragment of a child’s garment. The red unpicked threads are painstakingly fed into the tiny hole of a broken hourglass. Empty of sand, no longer able to count the passing of time, the glass vessel holds the threads within it, simultaneously trapping and protecting them.
The work speaks of loss, violence, and the fragility of life. It is a visceral response to the pain suffered by women and children in a world of increasing violence and conflict.
