The temporary beach artwork was created at South Beach,Whitehaven ,Cumberland in September 2023.Certain patches of the beach rockbed have fascinating patterns on the surface and at low tide I found a particularly striking example. The grid like sections resembles a quilt and I decided to highlight the structure using locally harvested pebbles which were scratched onto the surface. The pigment was rubbed in and then blended out and I coloured in the different sections with contrasting tones. The pebbles were sandstone, coal and other industrial products worn smooth by the sea and came from coal slag cliffs leftover from former coal mining on the beach. The artwork didn’t last long and succumbed to the next high tide.
