'Portland Works Inside Out' - video animation wall projection Commission

Client: Portland Works, Sheffield Event: 'Portland Works Inside Out' event 23rd-24th September 2016 as part of the ‘Festival of Mind’. The animation portrays the history, current use and rejuvination of of the grade II listed building, which was the first place in the world to produce stainless steel cutlery. Professor Peter Marsh – Director Portland Works : October 2016 “As producer of our mixed media event, 'Portland Works Inside Out’, I was delighted that Saranjit’s brilliant digital projection really did, as commissioned, turn us ‘inside out’ - it showed artistic flair and brilliance, and put our incredible makers, past and present, on display in a superb, almost magical, projection on the outside of our iconic Works building’ Georgina Barret- Manager Portland Works: October 2016 “As a small but thriving creative hub for traditional and contemporary makers, we commissioned Saranjit in the summer of 2016 to curate a community-friendly digital art instillation to be projected onto the outside of our Victorian factory building. The final product was both fun and engaging, a real hit with the community and the many people who attended the city-wide Festival. Working with Saranjit has been enjoyable and easy - he has gone over and above his commission - not only creating a digital art piece, but by composing toe-tapping accompanying music too”. I was attracted to this commission because it focused on the value of manual skill and craftsmanship. In a time where business tyrants seem to rule, here ‘family’, 'small' and ‘hand-made’ are the key words. This was one of the most important public art commissions I have undertaken to date. It was an immense pleasure to work with everyone at ‘Portland Works’ and create my first public art animation fusing music, visual image and architecture into one composition. Digital technologies allow the artist to express ‘multi-modally’ becoming an elaborate artist’s canvas where brush and paint are replaced by sound, moving image and word.

Birmingham and Solihull Jazz Festival 2016

This drawing was created live over four days through August 2012 and is part of an ongoing series titled 'Limits'. begun in 2011 at the Folkestone Triennial Fringe Festival. The process was to stand on the paper and draw using both feet, overall the drawing took around 12 hours. The fun part was meeting the locals in the hustle and bustle of the market nearby and in some cases creating portraits of them as they looked down at the work. The work was video documented.
