Propellers of the City

"Propellors of the City" is an artwork which sits in Sunderland's Keel Square. It honours the shipyard workers who were the unsung heroes who, through their craft, made Sunderland thrive as a city. Visitors are able to turn the 3.5m diameter glass and bronze propeller to allow the close inspection of the 500 inlayed photographic portraits of former shipyard workers. These photographs and names were collected through a process of active engagement with former shipyard workers and their families. The Keel Square development won the award for Best Public Space for Sunderland City Council at the 2015 Northern Design Awards.
