Static Bloom
Lucy Forrester
Static Bloom is constructed from discarded shoelaces transformed through heat. Subjected to melting and fusion, the individual laces lose their original function and coalesce into an intricate openwork structure that hovers between textile, organism and geological formation.
The process reveals hidden material characteristics ordinarily concealed within everyday objects. As the outer surfaces collapse, brightly coloured cores emerge, exposing the layered construction of the shoelaces and the petrochemical substances from which they are made. What initially appears to be a benign and familiar material is revealed as plastic, capable of transformation into entirely new forms.
The resulting structure suggests processes of growth and decay simultaneously. Resembling coral, fungal networks, cellular structures or mineral deposits, the work occupies an ambiguous territory between the natural and synthetic. Through melting, fragmentation and fusion, the shoelaces become a new material entity whose origins remain visible yet transformed.
Presented as part of Neither Natural solo exhibition at The Hub Static Bloom reflects upon the increasingly complex relationships between petrochemical materials and ecological systems. Hovering between attraction and unease, beauty and contamination, the work invites reflection on the unexpected material futures embedded within the objects of everyday life.
