Re Imagine Sunbury Cross

By Jera May 2026

Re Imagine Sunbury Cross is a community project developed from an Urban Romanticism concept. Which Explores our relationship with nature in urban places and the idea of Urban Wildlife Zones.  These are designated zones similar to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They have special significance in which nature is a priority and is proactively considered in decisions made by the people and councils that govern these areas. Urban Wildlife Zones are identified by their own communities. .

Significantly expanding the possibilities of urban planting to create natural habitats and opportunities to coexist with nature in urban areas. To understand nature is to understand ourselves.

Focus of this project was the Sunbury Cross area. I worked with a group of neurodiverse young people on a series of creative workshops and research trips. Through visiting the area, we talked to local people, explored visual ideas and discovered heritage stories through the local history society. The outcome of the project was a series of collages which used the Past Present Future framework as a conceptual structure to explore time, identity, evolution, narrative and future possibilities weaving together different temporal fragments—of past, present, and speculative future elements.  These collages were then turned into a zine and brought back and distributed to local area via shops, fast-food establishments, cafes, Sunbury Embroidery Gallery and the Sunbury Cross Library.
This project was funded by ESCALATE ARTS.
