Red Passage

By  Maria Kuipers 2014 - 2015
Painting 'Passage' was a process from a humble starting point working on observation sketches and drawings of the West Pier in Brighton. I began to develop relationships with the structure using collage, with shape, line and colour. Red became the predominant interest referring to the heat of the summer. Working a range of reds was the most challenging part because of using high chromatic colours one against the other and if one tone is too cold for example it will kill the whole painting. The drawn lines, shapes and spaces, inside and outside, created the drama and balance. The original dark lines referring to the Pier structures were edited and traces remain. The resulting painting seems to have echoes of the British Modern.
