Ringing the Changes

Kumihimo (the traditional Japanese art of braiding) embodies the aesthetic ideal of combining function and beauty. The pieces 'First Steps' and 'Ringing the Changes' take a playful look at that aesthetic ideal by transforming two dimensional instructions into three dimensional artwork. Inspired by my research for a previous exhibition at the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology the work is based both on the colouration of the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake and on the Kumihimo technique of Maru Yattsu Gumi. The pieces were made for a themed exhibition called 'Tracing Threads'. brass curtain rings, fine silk thread, clear elastic thread, perspex
